One of the Saronic islands of Greece in the Saronic Gulf. Keep in mind that the Aegina island was the first capital of modern Greece between January 1828 and October 1829. Tradition derives the name from Aegina the mother of the hero Aeacus, who was born in the island and became its king. It is a beautiful island, close to Athens with many popular beaches, picturesque roads, traditional taverns and many historical landmarks.
Aegina is approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) from east to west and 10 km (6.2 mi) from north to south, with an area of 87.41 km2 (33.75 sq mi).
Religion in Aegina island is interweave with the Mitropoli church. It is one of the most important monuments of the Kapodistrian era and it was opened in 1806. The church is dedicated to three different holy figures: the virgin Maria, the patron Saint of Aegina-Saint Dionysios and the Saint John the Theologian.
They say that Aeginas unique character used to attract artists like honey. So many great personalities and big figures such as writer Nikos Kasantzakis, Nobel prize winning poet Odysseas Elitis, painter Nikos Nikolaou preferred to live and work there.
Due to the fact that Aegina town was privileged to be the first capital of modern Greece, the architecture has so many Neoclassical features. The Neoclassical buldings are standing in the beautiful island since the 19th century and they are remind us the greek glorious past. Don’t forget to visit Paleochora, the byzantine town of Aegina island with the numerous churches. At the top of the hill stands the Venetian castle surrounded by many chapels.
Known for the famous beaches, Aegina island has a lot of sandy, family friendly, partly or totally organized beaches such as Perdika, Agia Marina, Souvala, Marathon. If you are a water sport fun, then the Agia marina beach is the right spot for you.
A definitely unique, easy and close route to disembark to a totally scenery island.
If you are capable of visiting another island or two, then Poros and Hydra island are the closest to Aegina.
Take a ride on the horses and the carriages, walk in the narrow, paved streets and see the traditional houses, the churches with the blue domes and the shops with folk art.
Also the fishing boats, that are not only used for fishing but for seiling groceries as well.
And finally don’t forget to buy the famous peanuts of Aegina.
