TINOS

Tinos is the third biggest island of the Cyclades behind Naxos and Andros. It belongs to northern Cyclades and is known worldwide as the sacred island of Virgin Mary. It has a population of 10.000 inhabitants and numbers 52 villages. The island mostly attracts Greek pilgrims travelling there twice a year, on March 25 and August 15, to visit the church of Panagia Megalochari (the Blessed Virgin Mary). The beaches are calm and sandy, surrounded by many tourist facilities and accommodation. The most traditional villages are located in the inland and they are famous for the picturesque architecture. Pyrgos is the most characteristic village of Tinos Greece, with a long tradition in marble carving. Combining religion with natural beauty and architecture with adventure it is the place to have it all.

Religion:

First thing that comes to the mind, is the Church of Panagia (Virgin), considered the protector of the country. Tinos is the most important Orthodox centre of worship in Greece but, in the same time, an important Catholic centre too; this so rare in Greece mix of religious traditions gives to the island a particular character.

 

Art:

The amazing Tinos is not only the island of religious faith but also the island of art: some of the most important Greek artists were born there such as the painters Nikephoros Lytras and Nikolaos Gyzis; sculptors such as Philippotis, Voulgaris and Giannoulis Chalepas, the Pheidias of Modern Greece, perpetuate the island tradition in marble-carving until today.

 

Architecture:

One can enjoy its unspoiled architecture, its picturesque 40 villages and way of living that is still present. The mountainous villages have picturesque architecture with paved streets, stone houses and lovely squares. The most traditional villages are located in the inland and they are famous for the picturesque architecture. Pyrgos is the most characteristic village of Tinos Greece, with a long tradition in marble carving. The wild landscape of Tinos island is dotted with dovecotes and churches, often constructed in privileged spots with view to the sea.

 

Beaches:

The beaches are calm and sandy, surrounded by many tourist facilities and accommodation. The most frequented are located on the southern side of the island, close to the Town, and they have many tourist facilities.
